Level 3 (Nasdaq: LVLT) is one of only six Tier 1 Internet providers in the world.

The company ranks as one of world's most connected Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and expanding assets have solidified the company's position as one of the largest IP transit networks.

Level 3 counts among its customers:

  • 19/20 of the world's top telecom companies
  • 9/10 of the largest telecom carriers in Europe
  • 4/5 of the top telecom companies in Asia
  • 9/10 of the top U.S. Internet Service Providers (ISPs)
  • 9/10 of the top U.S. cable companies
  • 5/5 of the top U.S. Wireless Service Providers

Today, Level 3 stands as an acknowledged leader in the communications industry, and continues to aggressively develop new technologies, pushing the boundaries as one of the key players in the technology revolution.

Level 3 Content Delivery

The move into the Content Delivery Services market was a natural step for a company whose IP network already supported major content providers and broadband providers around the world. In response to both customer demands for evolving content delivery services, and as a strategic move to bridge the gap between its communications services and its existing video broadcast and distribution services division (Vvyx), Level 3 purchased the CDN assets of Savvis in January 2007.

Since then, Level 3 has invested heavily in the CDN infrastructure, migrating it onto the Level 3 backbone, expanding operational capacity by 5 times, and integrating well established content applications and enhancements proven to handle the increasing demands of modern content delivery.

In doing so, Level 3 has combined the original ground-breaking Sandpiper Footprint® technology with an industry-leading high performance IP network and created a new breed of CDN that opens the door to a new era of a high performance, highly scalable CDN with significant and sustainable economies of scale.

About Level 3 and Vimeric PDF

In April 2000, the Smithsonian (Institution) cited Level 3 as a Computerworld Laureate for its historic achievement in creating a new kind of network infrastructure. The Smithsonian noted that Level 3 is changing communications at a fundamental level – and “helping to stimulate the biggest change in communications technology in 100 years".

"Level 3 Communications has focused its efforts on balancing innovation and cost efficiency.  Level 3 continues to focus on leveraging its IP network by adding capabilities, but will not invest in technology unless it ties back to the company’s original goal of driving cost-efficient operations, which leads to driving down prices and stimulating demand."
